TRUCTOR®
Vehicles Brief History |
 |
TRUCTOR® Inc. was formed in 1995 to develop
and market the unique TRUCTOR® vehicle which Robert Gibbons, invented and patented. Mr. Gibbons began
organized development of the TRUCTOR® concept in 1992. The idea for a combination
farm tractor and dump truck with multi-passenger, multi-function
capability grew out of Gibbons' observations in the early 80's
that tractors in developing countries were used more for on-road
transport than for tillage.
While serving as president of The Diesel Automobile &
Tractor Association (1978-82), he sensed that a vehicle using
mass-produced truck components could achieve good plowing
traction and also carry people and payloads faster than
conventional tractors. It could be produced more economically
than previous efforts to "strip-down" standard tractors.
Gibbons validated the TRUCTOR® concept in communications with UN
Food & Agricultural Organization agricultural engineers, and
other experts, who agreed that 70% of farm tractor use in these
countries is for on-road transport of people and goods, a
function for which they are poorly designed. The D-Series, with
its dual functions of tillage and transport (at up to 30 mph)
solves this problem. In 1994 Gibbons put together a team of agri-
& mechanical engineers with experience at Deere, Ford Tractor,
Wain-Roy, and other companies to help bring the concept into
prototypes. Engineering services were obtained from U. Mass
Dartmouth, U. of Nebraska Agricultural Engineering, and RI
School of Design students and faculty.
The first D-250 prototype was successfully tested to world
standards at Nebraska Tractor Test Labs in June, 1995. The D-250
also received valuable endorsement from World Bank agri-experts
who visited New Bedford for field trials. In 1996-97, the
Company refined these into pre-production models, began
development of a US model, and obtained patents and the
trademark.
The Company currently has two
product groups: TRUCTOR® D-Series, a unique "first-stage"
mechanization of agriculture for developing countries. And, the
TRUCTOR® T-Series, a more sophisticated version for affluent US
farms and ground maintenance markets. the North American
Equipment Dealers Association magazine, Equipment Dealer
has stated: "TRUCTOR® has drawn more interest than anything
we have published" (NAEDA letter 12/27/97) From feedback
at National Farm Machinery Shows, the Sunbelt Ag Expo
and dealer-farmer surveys 1996-98, the T-4000 was developed to
meet the needs of small US farms and grounds maintenance
operations. A study of U.S. markets was commissioned from
Univ.of Wisconsin Innovation Service Center, confirming US
market potential for a combination tractor-truck vehicle (Wall
St. Journal, 7/17/97,p.1). TRUCTOR®
T-Series is becoming the "next big thing" for small farmers,
ranchers, contractors, and exurbanites. |
